This is an archival project to compile unreleased and unedited sounds treasured by Merzbow=Masami Akita. The first series is a selection of cassette tape recordings from 1979 to 1981. It will be released over six CDs. This album, "23 November 1979 (B)" is the second release in this series, and as the name suggests, it was performed and recorded on November 23, 1979.
Here is the full text of Akita's notes on this recording.
'Oiginal tape is C-90, the A-side was released as a bonus disc in Merzbow's "Duo (Masami Akita & Kiyoshi Mizutani Selected Studio Sessions 1987-89)" 10-CD set on Tourette Records in 2013. This is the B-side of the C-90 tape. On the A side, Mizutani plays the organ and I play the drums and tape, but on the B side, we switch instruments, and on the first track, I play the organ and Mizutani plays the drums. On the second track, Mizutani returns to the organ and I play the drums. The tape used seemed to be "Metal Acoustic Music," and the sound from the cassette was played live through an amplifier.' Yes, Akita and Mizutani were not satisfied with just playing well, they wanted to create a sound that deviated from the usual music. This is a very raw recording that seems to be a record of the process of transformation of "rock" into "noise music".
