The Merzbow Archive series by Slowdown Records, which has released fourteen editions so far, enters its fifteenth edition. This edition contains recordings from 2014~2015. Since the previous edition of "Double Beat Sequencer" featured sequencer-based recordings from the same period, this edition collects performances without sequencers (although there are a few tracks with sequencers). Previously released original albums such as Wildwood (Dirter Promotions, 2015) and Torus (Jezgro, 2017) were recorded during the period overlapping this edition.
This album "Beetle" contains four performances recorded in November~December 2014. All of them are unreleased recordings, but the second track "14-11-946" has been used as material for collaboration in the past. The first track shows the antagonism between electronic sounds with a clear sound image reminiscent of works from the late 90's and the cracked noise sounds typical of Merzbow, while the second track shows abstract sounds with tremolo and distant noise floating around, and the third track shows a chaotic aspect with multiple sounds muddled together. The second track in particular, when listened to as a stand-alone performance of Merzbow, has an eccentric amount of information and center of gravity of sound, which explains the fact that it was used for collaboration.
