"Cloud Cock OO Grand" is Merzbow's first CD release, released in 1990 by ZSF Produkt. This album "Cloud Cock OO Grand (Another Mix)" is a different version of the original, with a very different mix and track length. The original "Modular" was omitted and replaced by a new track called "Untitled". In addition, the order of the songs has been changed.
The production of "Cloud Cock OO Grand" was a major change in Merzbow's approach to production. For the first time, the masters were produced on DAT, instead of cassette tape on open reel for previous releases. This made it possible to reproduce the volume and RMS as it was on the master, and it also gave him the advantage of being able to produce everything by himself from start to finish, just like on a cassette release. In other words, "Cloud Cock OO Grand" and this other take can be said to be a work that coincided with several changes, such as from analog to digital, from the 80s to the 90s, etc. The style is also different from the previous collages, with a very solid noise sound as the main focus. You can feel the drastic change.
There is a kinetic quality to the sound that cuts through space and the listener's sensibilities from a variety of angles, transforming without a break. It is a masterpiece that not only gives us a sense of unshakable strength even when we listen to it from the perspective of today's listeners who know his later works, but also gives us a sense of something symbolic as the work that opens the curtain for 1990s of Merzbow.
