Early Merzbow was a duo of Masami Akita and Kiyoshi Mizutani. This album is a reissue of a recording made in 1981, during the duo period. The original cassette was released in 1982 by "Lowest Music & Arts", a label by Mr. Akita. According to Akita, the "Collection" series is a series of works "created by mixing multiple tapes," and a total of 10 works were released from "Lowest Music & Arts" between 1981 and 1982. This is the tenth in the series. This is one of the most important early recordings in the history of Merzbow's work, and I would like to add that it was newly remastered at Munemihouse in Tokyo in February 2018 for this archive project. In other words, this is the "definitive version" of the album made by Mr. Akita 37 years after its release.
This album was recorded on October 26, 1981. It was probably recorded in Akita's home studio. 1981 is also the year when "Yantra Material Action", one of the lineup of this archive project, was recorded ("Yantra Material Action" was released in 1983 after the title of "Merz", which was scheduled to be released as Merzbow's 1st album, was changed. "Merz" was scheduled to be released as the first self-produced record of the magazine "Fool's Mate", but it was canceled). In other words, "1981" was the year of the first album (actually, it was a complicated story as I mentioned earlier), and it was a fulfilling period for the duo and early Merzbow. The melt of noise, performance, and rhythm in this work is the crystallization of the "nonsense of music" characteristic of early Merzbow. This is truly a valuable record in the history of noise music.
