The Merzbow Archive series by Slowdown Records, which has released six editions so far, enters its seventh edition. This edition consists of six albums of unearthed material from 1996 to 1998. This album "Tauro-O2" contains outtakes from the 1998 album "Tauromachine" (Relapse / Release) and unused material from the same period (the 'O' in the title is the 'O' in Outtakes). A lot of unreleased material from 1996~97 was previously included in the 10 CD box "Merzmorphosis" (Youth Inc., 2012). However, they did not include material related to "1930" (Tzadik) and "Tauromachine" (Relapse / Release), which were produced during this period. Therefore, this "Tauro-O2" material is the first release. In this work, Moog Rogue, Theremin, Novation Bass Station, TR606, etc. are used in addition to EMS Synthi 'A' which was acquired in late 1994. In a further anomaly, a BIAS ROCKAKU-KUN EXD Electronic Drum Unit is also used. One of the characteristics of the sounds produced using these units is that they emphasize bass sounds and make extensive use of filters due to the influence of techno and drum 'n' bass. Not only EMS Synthi 'A', but also many other synths and drum synths are used, so depending on the scene, there is a mixture of slightly different textures of oscillation and bass loops, which is very exciting not only as noise, but also as abstract electronic music with extreme sound movements.
At the time, Akita was also obsessed with modern architecture (mainly the reconstruction of Tokyo after the Great Kanto Earthquake), and many of the artworks released during this period featured photographs of these buildings, which became an essential visual element of his work. For this reason, the artwork for this edition also uses photographs of buildings and other structures taken by Akita around 1998.

While still sounding harsh a lot of the time, this will not obliterate you like other Merzbow releases. Steady elements give a noob like me something to cling to amidst the chaos. Hans
He has been working with post 1970s noise for more than 40 years & you need to understand that scratchy squelches, bleats, drones, explosive buzzes & high pitched squealing squeals are his trademark. There is joy in this racket & it is well worth discovering. I've stopped cooking and eating turkey on Thanksgiving thanks to Masami! MERZILLA
