The Merzbow Archive series by Slowdown Records, which has released seven editions so far, enters its eighth edition. This edition contains recordings made in 1999, when Merzbow stopped using analog equipment and started working with computers. Since Merzbow would continue to work primarily with computers for some time after this, the recordings from this period can be regarded as the very beginning of his laptop style.
As the title suggests, this album "Tentacle (1st Mix)" contains the first mix of the album "Tentacle" (Alchemy) released in 1999. Since the end of the 80's, when Merzbow's live activities became more active, many of his works had a relationship between repetitive sounds and explosive noises that threatened them. However, in this album, with the exception of the fourth track, there are very few occasions where repetitive sounds can be heard, and the dominant sound is the ever-changing, improvisational noise. In addition, the texture of the noise varies from fine particles running through the space to low bit rate rough ones, and wriggling ones in the low frequency range, giving an abstract and chaotic impression. The fourth track, on the other hand, brings to the fore a composition in which the movement of several types of noise is patterned and turns into a loop, creating a very strong contrast within a album. Although this is a recording made shortly after the introduction of computers, it clearly shows the multiple directions in which they could be used, and it can be said that this is a work that is compactly packed with important elements for listening to Merzbow in this period.
