The Merzbow Archive series by Slowdown Records, which has released eight editions so far, enters its ninth edition. This edition contains unreleased material from 2001 to 2003. From 1999 to the mid-00's, the computer became the main tool in Merzbow's production, and from 2001~2003, this method of production led to such notable works as "Dharma" (Double H Noise Industries, 2001), "Merzbeat" (Important Records, 2002), and "A Taste Of..." (Mego, 2002).
This album, "3rd Of May Vol.1", was recorded on May 3, 2003. May 2003 was the time when "Cycle" (Very Friendly, 2003), "Merzbird" (Important Records, 2004), and "Tamago" (Plan-DX17, 2004) were being recorded. In this album, you can hear many elements that are similar to "Tamago," such as the drum sample-like sound that flies in from all directions in the middle part of the album, and the loop that incorporates bold sound cuts at the end. Due to the 45-minute length of each track, there are also bursts of digital effects that create the unique collapsing soundscape that is characteristic of Merzbow's work during this period, groovy moments where repetitive sounds are foregrounded, and the four on the floor that appear in the final part are also impressive. It is important to note that in the style of the laptop period, in which repetition was inherent in various forms such as periodic filter movements and mechanical sample loops, at this point a sound clearly reminiscent of drums began to be introduced, which is important in understanding the changes in style that followed. At the same time, it is interesting to note that this drum-like sound is used sporadically (or improvised) in this album, rather than as a beat.

He has been working with post 1970s noise for more than 40 years & you need to understand that scratchy squelches, bleats, drones, explosive buzzes & high pitched squealing squeals are his trademark. There is joy in this racket & it is well worth discovering. I've stopped cooking and eating turkey on Thanksgiving thanks to Masami! MERZILLA

While still sounding harsh a lot of the time, this will not obliterate you like other Merzbow releases. Steady elements give a noob like me something to cling to amidst the chaos. Hans
