The Merzbow Archive series by Slowdown Records, which has released eight editions so far, enters its ninth edition. This edition contains unreleased material from 2001 to 2003. From 1999 to the mid-00's, the computer became the main tool in Merzbow's production, and from 2001~2003, this method of production led to such notable works as "Dharma" (Double H Noise Industries, 2001), "Merzbeat" (Important Records, 2002), and "A Taste Of..." (Mego, 2002).
This work, "Material for Structure I" was recorded in 2002. It is a kind of mixed sound work, in which various sounds are intermingled within a 50-minute track. In the first half of the piece, there is a strong element of repetition, which gradually develops into a chaotic avalanche of sounds. The use of repetitive elements in the first half does not play a role in supporting the improvisational noise. It is interesting to note that the entire noise sound with sufficient thickness has a repetitive rhythm, and it is layered on top of each other. Also, from the middle part of the track, electronic sounds with randomized frequencies are used to color the space, and sounds that can be efficiently generated by computers are used throughout. The noises that appear from the middle part of the song show a freakiness that is no less than the improvisational and tactile movements that were produced by the analog equipment configuration of the 1990s, indicating that the performance expression using computers has matured and diversified.
